UNC Black & Blue Tour

UNControllables is presenting:

BLACK AND BLUE TOUR OF UNC CAMPUS
"A crash course in UNC's Black history"
Thursday, September 3rd
4:00PM - UNC Visitors' Center (next to the Planetarium)

The “Black and Blue Tour” provides insight into the history of Black folks on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. Using campus landmarks and monuments to ground us, we will uncover the University's past and the ways it is still intimately connected to and impacting the present; from the enslaved men and women who built the first University buildings to brilliant Black women intellectuals who were rejected from Carolina based solely on racism and sexism.

Do you know how many of the 250 campus buildings are named after Black folks? Why is there so much opposition to Silent Sam? Did the University ever own slaves? African-American Studies Professor Robert Porter will touch on these and other questions on the tour.

National attention has been focused on racialized geographies like these in the past year. Take this opportunity to learn about the historical and present realities right under your feet.

For folks who want to keep talking and sharing, we'll find an outdoor location after the tour to debrief and strategize based on what we've learned.

This edition of the Black and Blue tour is organized by the UNControllables as part of Radical Rush Week 2015, Aug 31 - Sept 5th. Find the complete schedule here: www.radicalrushweek2015.wordpress.com

Friends of Downtown Candidates Forum

"Starting promptly at 10:00 a.m., we will begin with the challengers (Jessica Anderson, Pam Hemminger, Adam Jones, Gary Kahn, Paul Neebe, Nancy Oates, Michael Parker and David Schwartz), followed by the incumbents (Donna Bell, Lee Storrow and Jim Ward), and then Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt. Before answering their first question, each candidate will have two minutes to introduce themselves. After each question, someone from the audience (chosen at the discretion of the Moderator) will ask one follow-up question on the topic.

If time permits, we will ask a second question of each candidate, in the same order, with an audience follow-up question.

Gatherings of the Friends of the Downtown are free and open to the public, with parking in the hotel gated lots as available. Parking is also available in the Town lots behind Chipotle, next to 411 West, the 140 West Parking Garage and elsewhere downtown.

We look forward to seeing you on September 24th and to an exciting election season.
