Chapel Hill Fake News

Today's Chapel Hill News published a letter by someone named Yelena Francis equating the people who protested at the Silent Sam statue on Sept 1 with Russian Communists who destroyed Tsarist statues.  The newspaper gave this letter the title "Leftist déjà vu" and place it just below an amateurish cartoon showing Silent Sam being carted away and replaced by a statue of Dean Smith.

This pisses me off for one simple reason:

The students did not call for the removal of Silent Sam, and the Chapel Hill News should know this.

They called for a plaque to be placed on the side of the statue explaining when and why the statue had been erected and what it represented and still represents.  They were wise enough to realize that we need to keep Silent Sam and learn from it over and over.

I recommend The Carrboro Citizen, WCHL 1360 AM, and sometimes the Daily Tarheel Tar Heel. [The rest of my comment is self-censored because I'm trying to be nice.]

I'll say this instead: http://orangepolitics.org/tags/chapel-hill-news

One correction -- Tar Heel is two words.  My wife the former editor gets very upset over that one.

I always get that wrong. I'm going to abuse my editorial priviledge and correct it.

Nice feature of the DTH -- they made me 7 years younger today!   http://www.dailytarheel.com/index.php/article/2011/09/early_voting_reloc...

After writing this last night, I discovered that I'd made a typo in the address of the CHN when I sent them a proposed op ed piece about silent sam.  After sending it to the proper address, I'm delighted to say that I have heard back and believe that it will be published soon. Also, Ruby, I did send it to the Carrboro Citizen but haven't heard back. The most responsive person around has to be Ron Stutts at WCHL.
