Local GOP chair to run for Congress

I read in the Chapel Hill News this morning that Augustus Cho, the chairman of the Orange County Republican Party, is going to run against David Price. Supposedly other Republicans are considering the same. What do ya'll know about him? All I know about Cho is from the 'My View' Column he writes every month.

Side note: Why is the Chapel Hill News story 'Thieves hit washing machines' above the story 'GOP chair Cho to challenge Price'?

Because the chance of one's favorite washer being disabled by a thief is significantly higher than the chance of Price getting beat by a Republican in the district as currently drawn?

I served with him on the CH Transportation Board. He's a nice guy, but when it came to split votes I can't say we agreed on very much aside from the Larkspur issue. He's not a nutjob like some of the OCGOPs I've run into over the years, but he's far too conservative to stand much chance of even getting close to David Price in a general election. Augustus seems to have made a regular hobby out of criticizing John Edwards.

Augustus Cho is OCGOP Chairman. Orange County resident Martha Jenkins (Whitecross) is the NCGOP 4th District Chairman. It is Martha's job to recruit a warm body candidate to challenge David Price.

Cho's candidacy is probably an indicator that Martha is having difficulties or failures in recruiting. Cho is probably a place holder until a "viable" Republican candidate can be recruited.

A similar stunt was pulled in the 2004 NC Senate District 23 race when the person who filed to run against Ellie Kinnaird withdrew. When that happened, the OCGOP got to choose the real candidate/challenger.

I may be completely wrong, but I bet that is what's happening here.

Augustus seems like he's in this for the long haul. Via the OCGOP mailing list (know your enemy):

You will be reading soon about the resignation of our chairman, Augustus Cho. The exciting news is that he is running for Congress in the 4th District, so he has resigned as our chairman to campaingn(sic) full time. We wish him all the best! Virginia Ferguson will be our acting chairman.

Sincerely,
Martha Jenkins
OCGOP Communications Director

Cho was helpful when I met him at a Transportation Board meeting and mentioned that the camera in the SV Park & Ride had been vandalized and inoperable for several months (or else it was a coincidence). Also, he referees my kid's Rainbow league.

Still and all, I ain't voting for no damn Republican.

Careful, Robert, the media will start writing stories about you! ;)

Where has the civility gone?

"Cho's candidacy is probably an indicator that Martha is having difficulties or failures in recruiting. Cho is probably a place holder until a "viable" Republican candidate can be recruited."

Actually, no, this is not true. Another Republican is preparing to launch a campaign, but he is committed to bringing the troops home from Iraq. So Jenkins is running Cho (or Cho as a placeholder) so she could quickly put forth a pro-war candidate.

I have no idea why they think a pro-war candidate can win in District 4, but I do know that the other candidate does have some great ideas (and to reiterate, he is against police action and nation-building in Iraq).

Price has supported fundinmg bills for the wars.

The candidate I referred to earlier has announced his candidacy: BJ Lawson of Cary.

Finally a candidate around here that understands how to use the web - and it's a Republican! Well, hopefully this will kick a few butts...
