OPTV Election Week 2007

The last video went over well, so here's another. I recapped what went on on the site this week, and managed to keep it under 14 minutes...

Sorry for the errors and weird editing. The fan noise is actually my laptop (which is recording the video) so I can't turn it off. I'd like to get it shorter, but that would actually take me longer! Your feedback is welcome. I'm learning...

And FYI, OPTV is archived here.

Hi Ruby, Have you changed the media format since your election night coverage? Mozilla Firefox is claiming I need the Apple Quicktime plug-in this time, it didn't last time. Let me know if you have it saved somewhere in another format. I'd rather not install yet another annoying proprietary player on my laptop if I can help it, but I also don't want to miss your video blogs :-)

Ruby - This is spectacular - as were the maps - thanks for expanding the limits of op. Thanks too for your support for social justice in the Rogers Road/Eubanks communities.
Very smooth feed on the video through QT.

Thank you, Suzanne. Jay, I did use a different format for the player. It was previously Flash, now it's embedded QuickTime. You should be able to see it archived here: http://blip.tv/topics/view/orangepolitics

Do others have preferences about the format?

I agree. Show Flash video instead of Quicktime. :)

I would strongly prefer it not to be in Quicktime, at least until Apple decides to open up the format. At least the Flash version seemed to play okay with Gnash.

Another vote for flash.

I may have a desk mic you could use if you want to try that to get rid of the fan noise. You can get a decent USB mic for about $25 from amazon.com, too.

The hum shouldn't worry you unless you're cutting to other locations, in which case sound becomes an issue. Black frames and white frames make the cuts look much more professsional. White frames look kind of like a camera flash, especially if you pop in a little sound effect.

I wonder if you could work it with the public tv channel to podcast meetings so you don't have to wear out yours or Tom's or Will's keyboard doing live blogging. Seems like it'd be win-win for everyone, but I dunno how hard it would be to implement.

OK, the player should be working better now. Y'all who had trouble with Quicktime, please try it again.

Chris, many local government meetings are available online. I've found that most folks don't actually want to sit through 3 hour meetings and video unfortunately does not allow for effective skimming. The more ways people can get the information, the better.

Chapel Hill Town Council Meeting Video is here. How many of you can watch this video stream?

Worked perfectly, Ruby. Great weekly wrap-up. I hope you'll continue for those of us who wish we had the extra time to read every thread entirely. Thanks for requesting technical input, and especially for responding democratically :)

Don't get me wrong on rejecting Quicktime, I love Apple....if they were more competitively priced, I'd have bought one. I just don't want my new laptop teeming with a dozen different proprietary players, each one sapping resources, each one nagging for updates and upgrades, etc. You get the idea, I don't want to drag the thread off-topic.

Keep coming with the new innovations. I hope you'll consider the "roving reporter" potential with the video blogs. I think you'd be a natural.
