Snow Daze - Council Meeting Delayed

We're covered in ice and snow yet again! Why couldn't we get storms like this when I was a kid and longed for them? Now I am a telecommuter so as long as the power is on, I don't get snow days. :(

Feel free to share your snow stories here in this open thread. Anyone know if the Chapel Hill Town Council is still meeting tonight? Their website is still down!

The town gets its internet access through Time Warner. Individual departments contract with different web hosting systems. I can't tell from the PSINet site, but it looks like the main town website may be on a PSInet server--although I was pretty sure the web server was located at Town Hall. Servers from one contractor and access through another? Is that possible? Wouldn't that introduce more chaos than using a single contractor? I'm in over my head but would like to understand this better if anyone has time to explain.

Maybe the folks who used to run the old LaUNChpad site could offer some hosting?

As a a procedural motion, would it be possible to grant full speaking rights to Woody, allocate him the balance of time, and consider tv-timeouts to be equivalent to lending back the appropriate amount of time to other speakers?

Yes, Ruby. It was intended to be a humerous suggestion to an "obvious expert," but it proves once again how hard it is to communicate in this medium where humor won't work without a flag or some symbol to indicate it was humor. Thanks for the warning that "some" might just miss what was intended to be humorous.

You could use emoticons to show your joking (I am shuttering as I write that).

But more to the point of this thread, I've traced the route to www.townofchapelhill.org and to www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us both of which are aliases for www.chapelhill.aa.psiweb.com BTW. From here at work the speed to the server is very nice. Once you get to the server, nothing happens. We, the Town and the Citizens, have a webserver that's been dead completely for over 24 hours and uselss for longer than that. Ugh!

I'm sure the Town IP folks aren't having fun.

Paul,

The www.ci link is still working for me but the other isn't. Try cleaning out your Internet files.

It's still not working for me at either address.

Fred I know you know your stuff, but if anyone knows when to dump his cache, it's Paul Jones. "Best Geek of The Triangle 2003" ( http://www.ibiblio.org/pjones/indy/ ). ;-)

For what it's worth, I'm getting the same message as Ruby was getting "Description: Too much time has passed without sending any data for document "http://38.15.67.10" when I try either the link posted by Fred http://www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us/ or the http://www.townofchapelhill.org address.

It's about 8:25 pm. Looks like the town is having a lot of trouble with their servers. If anyone from the Town is reading, I hope this helps out.

Is it just me or is the website down again?

You may be right, Mike. Something is wrong, but it's a different error message than before. I'm getting:

"Inactivity Timeout

---

Description: Too much time has passed without sending any data for document "http://38.15.67.10/".

--"

But then again, I've had trouble with a lot of web sites today, it's hard to tell if it's that crazy new worm, my ISP, or what.

Ruby,

It's 7:00 PM and I'm getting in fine.

Well I'm still not getting in, but it may just be me. I get the same error message as I posted above (on a Carolina Blue background).

Wednesday night! Hmm...Town council meeting on RLCs or risers at the NC State game. Decisions!

Maybe the town can reschedule so I can go... (j/k!)

The town website is back online! Only a day or two after we needed it. Anyway, here's more info I gathered there:

Street Conditions: All major roads and bus routes have been plowed, salted and

sanded. There is a coating of ice on many of the streets that have

been plowed. Many local streets continue to be treacherous. We

will continue to apply a salt-sand mixture throughout the morning

and will give additional attention to secondary streets.

Bus Operations: We now are operating the following routes: FCX, HU, and S

routes serving the Friday center and NC 54 Park-Ride lots to the

campus and hospitals; the NS and T routes serving the Eubanks

Road and Southern Village Park-Ride lots, downtown, the campus

and the hospitals; the U and RU routes serving downtown, the

campus and hospitals; and the CL, CM, CW, D, J and N routes

serving Carrboro, Northside, downtown and East Franklin Street.

Additional routes will be added as road conditions permit.

Refuse Collection:

Residential: We have determined that conditions are too hazardous to permit

residential refuse collection service today. The combination of

difficult raod conditions and unsafe footing for workers necessitate

a delay in service. Collection services will be provided on the

normal routes on Thursday and Friday of this week.

Commercial: At this time, we expect that commercial refuse collection service

will be provided on the regular routes today, although service

times may be delayed. Commercial service that normally would

have been provided on Monday will be provided today.

Library Hours: The Library will open at 10:00 a.m. today as normal and close at

the normal time.

Community Center Hours: Parks and Recreation Administrative offices will open at 8:30 as

normal.

South Estes Drive: The South Estes Drive Community Center will open at 10:00 a.m

today; the swimming pool also will open at 10:00.The Community

Center will close at the normal time today.

Hargraves: The Hargraves Community Center will open at 10:00 a.m. today

and will close at the normal time.

Town Hall: Town Hall will be open during regular hours today.

Police: Police department operations are normal, with relatively few

vehicle accidents.

Fire: Fire Department Operations are normal, with no fires and no

serious emergency medical calls.

Reminders: The Town's normal website has been restored to service at:

www.townofchapelhill.org .

Whoops, just checked e-mail and found my question answered by the Town Clerk:
