Comments

Most Gracious:Elizabeth Edwards

I'll second Jacquie!

This is great, Mary! I laughed at a couple of them. Thanks for my inclusion, though "Most likely to succeed" would have really made my day. :)

Most likely to start a fire: Eric M.
Most tongue in cheek: Mark M. (he's hilarious sometimes)

David,
I wanted to give Eric an award, but I didn't want to start something!
Oy, the awards I thought better of posting...

Most unpredicatable...
Most obnoxious...
Most righteous...
Most emotionless...
Most humorless...
Most boring...
Most ridiculous...
Meanest...
Person I would like to drag to therapy...
Person I wish would post more...
Person I wish would post less...
Person who has disappeared, and I miss...
Favorite conservative...
Most inflexible thinker...
Person I would most like to get to know...
Person I would least like to get to know...
Person who brings up my 'stuff'...
Person I would like to punch in the nose...
Person I have grown most fond of...
Person I most want to help...
Person I most go out of my way to disagree with...
Most misunderstood...
Dumbest genius ...

BTW, I think you have a great shot at 'succeeding'...

Goshdarnit, Mary! Now I have to rewrite my column. (not really)

Here's two more:
Most judicious use of OP by an elected official: Mark K.
Best defense of a controversial post: Ginny.

I also have an award for Terri which is either:

Best researcher...

OR

Way too much time on her hands...

Only she knows which she has really earned (maybe both?).

:)

Which local heavy-hitter is the biggest lurker?

Step into the light and claim your award....

I'm sure this thread is making Mark M ectastic. Now he has something to fill in the gaps between "scintillating articles on people shopping AFTER Christmas" and New Years Resolutions!

Dan--I will only accept the best researcher award if I can share with you and Will. Wanna share the other one too? :)

I'll second the nomination of Ginny for best defense of a controversial post.

Since Mary R was so generous in her divvying up, she really deserves something better than most ignored on LEAP. Most snitty comments?

Eric--the progressive most likely to ignore the progressive party line? (an honor in IMHO)

Gerry Cohen--best memory (Dan C is a close second)

Most thoughtful posts--Anita

Sincerely,

Terri, aka the pit bull

Amendment: Mary's award should be "best snitty comments" not most snitty. Sorry Mary, should have taken time to proofread.

Best blog host who makes this all possible: Ruby-Thanks for a good year!

Thanks, Terri, I accept your award as phrased.

I'd like to thank the Academy, my parents, my loving wife Leslie, my two wonderful and beautiful daughters, my extremely cute little dog, all of my high school English teachers (especially Ms. Carpenter, whose exercises in sentence diagramming set me up for a life in writing), Michael Chertoff, Sam Alito, Steve McQueen, Elie Wiesel, Paul McCartney, Glenn Tilbrook, Andy Partridge, Josef Ratzinger, and my therapist.

My suggested category: "Most Like Karl Rove." Nominations?

On reflection, I believe that my sophomore year English teacher was still Mrs. Carpenter. It was 1977, after all.

Since I can't get Eric's award, I hereby nominate myself for "most annoying poster from the local media." ;-)

Seems like we can't give Eric the Most Likely to Start a Fire award. That has to go to Ginny doesn't it?

See http://missoginny.blogspot.com/ if you don't get this post.

Most likely to enjoy the recycling bin delivered today: John K. (Don't tell me they missed your house...)

Dang! Is that what that container was for? I took it out back, filled it with sand and used it to sight in my new scope on my high powered rifle! Oh well, I guess at least it won't hold any rain water. I gotta get all the lead slinging in I can, before I am annexed. I am sure it is illegal to discharge a weapon within town limits...

I am truly honored to be nominated for the award of curmudgeon, accept the award and will do my best to rant in such a manner as to retain the award in perpetuity.

I too am thankful for this site, I have really enjoyed it. I would prefer personal conversation, but I this is a very good second place.

Perhaps some day we can have an OP regular's party?

I nominate Melanie See for best political historian, and best overall "poster-child".

Happy New Year and Blessings to all!!!!

Happy New Year to all-- and John, no one on OP invited me to a party... how about you?

John--
Thanks...I think!

In typical town-gown relations traditions, the UNC bloggers on our somewhat cohesive blogring are having their own get-together without inviting the townies. :)

Ours will be better than yalls though, if only because we go into this with full awareness of how nerdy it is to have a bloggers party, because we are poor students for whom chips and salsa counts as classy hors d'oeurves and because our invitations will be caricatures drawn by the witty and talented Pip. And because those of you who read The Daily Tar Heel online may miss Pip's cartoons -- http://piptoons.blogspot.com .

Hmm, I wasn't invited to an OP party either. Maybe because I'm so serious?!

wow, I got two awards. Thanks all!

I would like to add that I've met Eric, I've dined and conversed with Eric. He is definitely better in writing than in person.

Ahh. Back from a really nice vacation.

Party invitation?? Guys, I was just daydreaming about having one, it was a suggestion.....I could not dream of throwing one, unless you all are into spam and pork rinds with a coke or cheap beer chaser!!

Melanie- let me 'splain- a "real" poster child as defined by me is someone who presents something well enough to get their picture put on a poster. Thus you being a "poster (to this site) child" was intended as a compliment.

JMK

I don't doubt the dubious honor Mary bestowed upon me above which indicates that people are unlikely to listen to me on topics regarding UNC.

Is there some other information delivery method y'all would prefer? Or do you just not care? Is there anything I can do to convince readers that I love my alma mater as much as anyone else in this town and that I am working for what I think are it's own best interests, as well as Chapel Hill's?

Or should I just try to forget the 10 years I have spent working on and learning about this issue and move on to something less "controversial?"

I need to know as there is some UNC news on which I have some pertinent background information. Guess I'll just tell my cats.

PS: There is/was no "OP party" that I'm aware of, Joan.

[I knew there wasn't a party.]

Ruby, I think Mary's post was tongue-in-cheek, and in any event, all she's saying is that she is unlikely to read you on the subject of UNC. That doesn't necessarily mean that others are unlikely to read you. So keep writing!

But Eric, I think Mary is right. (Although it would have been nice to get some other award.) I know people tune me out on that topic, probably thinking "here comes another rant..." I am seriously asking how I can be a more effective advocate on this issue. Or maybe people are just incurably burnt-out on hearing from me.

(Joan: Sorry. My friends don't call me "literal girl" for nothing. I guess we're both "too serious." ;-} )

Ruby,
I don't think you or anyone else can be effective. Seems to me UNC was never really interested in collaboration... but you have to keep trying... a righteous contrarian ultimately gets her award... though she may bore us (and even herself) in the process...

:)

Just a quick note to thank all you "best" folks for keeping this amazing place running so smoothly and effectively. I've learned much by spending time with OP over the past year . . . and I look forward to even more in 2006.

J

Back in high school, my superlative award was "Most Studious." I was (and continue to be) a nerd of the highest order.

I forgot an award:
Most one-track mind: Patrick M.
http://world.nycsubway.org/perl/show?42788

Mary, I feel that this is an unfair characterization. I think most people who read my posts realize that I am strongly in favor of DOUBLE-TRACK railways.

To all those who read my transportation/land use-focused postings on OP, thanks.
