Calendar
I have added a new calendar of events to the site. I would like to keep it limited to mostly just election-related events for now. You can find a link to it near the top of the side bar to the right.
Please contact us if you know of additional events we should add, and include a link or as much information as you can find.

Does any one know how to get
Does any one know how to get in touch with the OC Dem Women?HAving a debate at same time as a board meeting puts those of us currently serving on the board in a real pinch. If all of the canidates currently on the board came to the debate there would not be enough board members to have a meeting.I can't find anyone to talk to about this and have not gotten any formal notice.
MAny thanks
JAcquie
Jacquie, you are exactly
Jacquie, you are exactly right. I think the OCDW are obviously going to have to change that date or risk the legitimacy of their event. The only information I've gotten about them was this: http://orangepolitics.org/2005/09/first-look-at-chapel-hill-candidates/#...
That comment implies that their contact person is candidate Katrina Ryan, which is definitely not a good idea. Here's a free clue for the OCDW: Don't have candidates organizing your candidate forums if you want to appear at all fair. Duh.
Jacqui and Ruby, I contacted
Jacqui and Ruby,
I contacted the OCDW chair over the weekend about both issues--the date for the Carrboro forum and the inpropriety of having a candidate handling the organizing. I believe the chair is reading this forum, so I expect we will see a revised date and contact person posted here very soon.
I only organized the Chapel
I only organized the Chapel Hill forum, as we were short a program chair. I won't be organizing the Carrboro forum. We are working on a date that allows all the candidates and our members( and other democratic organizations) to attend. It's a bit of a challenge. Invitations should go out late this week.
The Chapel Hill Carrboro
The Chapel Hill Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, in association with EmPOWERment and WCHL, will host candidate forums as follows:
October 5, 2005 Carrboro Town Hall 6-8 pm. Candidates for Carrboro Mayoral and Alderman races.
October 11, 2005 6-8 pm Hargraves Community Center, Chapel Hill. Candidates for Chapel Hill Mayoral and Town Council races.
Both forums will be broadcast live by WCHL. I don't have a link for you, but here is the announcement from the Chamber Newsletter. Hope to see all of you there!
-------------------------------------------------
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce has planned several election activities. The Chamber is submitting a candidate survey and conducting individual candidate interviews. These results will be posted on the Chamber's website at www.carolinachamber.org/elections/ in early October. The Chamber is also hosting two forums in conjunction with EmPOWERment in the Northside Community and WCHL. Each forum will be broadcast live by WCHL. The Carrboro Mayor and Board of Aldermen forum is scheduled for October 5 from 6pm-8pm at Carrboro Town Hall Board Room. The Chapel Hill Mayor and Town Council forum is scheduled for October 11 from 6pm-8pm at Hargraves Community Center.
Thanks forthe info, Anita.
Thanks forthe info, Anita. I've added the Chamber forums to the calendar.
I'm also removing the OCDW event until further details are available.
The Chamber forums were
The Chamber forums were listed on the Candidate Forums thread, along with two neighborhood events that weren't included in the calendar. What's the criteria for being included in the calendar? Candidate forums only or do you intend to include other public events, like tonight's showing of the End of Suburbia?
Good questions, Terri! I've
Good questions, Terri! I've been debating the criteria and it's certainly open for discussion. I couldn't find any information (besides your post) about the other events and I felt weird posting them without contact info or anything. I would like to list them, but I'd like to publish more info about them.
After the election the calendar will probably include other stuff, but for now it will be limited to campaign-related events.
Due to the scheduling
Due to the scheduling conflicts that have been brought to my attention, OCDW has been working on a new date for its forum. We are considering either Monday, October 3, or Thursday, October 13. (It appears that the School Bd. only meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, but please correct me if I am wrong). Which of those two dates will depend on the number of volunteers who indicate they will be able to staff it. I hope to have a firm date in order to send written notices to the candidates and the press this week.
Also, I am the President of OCDW, and I can assure you that Katrina Ryan will not be given any advantage in the program. Our forums consist totally of questions from the audience, and we do not make any endorsements, as it is the Democratic Party's policy not to endorse one Democrat over another in any race--even if it is technically non-partisan. (Just ask Judge Wynn). Katrina's involvment in the Carrboro forum will not rise above the level of moving tables and bringing cookies--if that. Though she may post notices of any changes on this Blog, since she visits it more than I do.
If you have any questions for me, my direct contact info is on the Orange Co. Democratic Party website. www.orangedems.com
Chris, will you also have
Chris, will you also have Mayoral candidates at the Oct. 6 forum?

DTH announces forums
The Daily Tar Heel has announced a date for its candidate forum for the Chapel Hill Town Council and Carrboro Board of Aldermen. The newspaper will host the candidates in a Town Hall-style forum setting on Thursday, October 13th from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Questions will be split between half read by DTH Editor Ryan C. Tuck and half asked by audience members in attendance. Tuck's questions will be a mix between those generated by the newspaper's editorial board and several submitted by readers. All are invited to attend the forum, which will be held on campus in Manning Hall 209. Directions: Manning Hall is located next to Hamilton Hall behind Lenoir Hall. Parking is available both on Emerson and Lenoir drives. Campus parking is available anywhere after 5 p.m. An aerial map is provided here: http://sils.unc.edu/about/visit.html.
Also, for the first time in its history the newspaper will host an additional forum this month designed to attract more University community interest in municipal elections. The 329 student-aged voters who participated in 2003 are a constant reminder that the campus community has held a passing interest in local political affairs. We feel a responsibility to help change that. With co-sponsors in Student Government, the College Republicans, Young Democrats, VoteCarolina, Black Student Movement, the Graduate and Professional Student Federation and the Interfraternity Council, we will host an informal community speak-out style forum on Sept. 28 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Greenlaw 101. We would like all candidates to come if they can make it to be able to meet and chat with students in a very relaxed atmosphere. Jonathan Howes, special to the chancellor for local affairs and former Chapel Hill mayor, also will attend. Students will be able to converse with all candidates in attendance, register to vote or change their voter registration information and learn about the impacts of municipal elections on campus life. Each organization, with the DTH at the helm, is assembling an information brief on the ways local municipalities affect the university. It is our hope that around 500 some students will come to this first forum of its kind and help create a healthy buzz around local elections that could translate into acceptable turnout numbers. Greenlaw is the building between Bingham and Lenoir. Parking is available on Emerson and Lenoir drives or anywhere on campus, as it is after 5 p.m. Again, a map is available at: http://sils.unc.edu/about/visit.html.
The DTH forum is actually
The DTH forum is actually Oct. 6 -- some folks couldn't attend Oct. 13, as that's Yom Kippur.
That's a good question,
That's a good question, Ruby. Let me turn around and ask Ryan ...
Ryan: "Yes."
And there you have it!
Thanks, guys. I'll add that
Thanks, guys. I'll add that to the item on the calendar. You might want to add that to your announcement.
The OCDW (Orange Co.
The OCDW (Orange Co. Democratic Women)Carrboro / School Board Candidates Forum will be on Wednesday, October 19 at 7:30p.m. at the Southern Human Services Building on Homestead Road. Written invitations went out on Friday to all candidates for Carrboro Mayor, Carrboro Bd. of Alderman, and CHCCS School Board inviting them to the event.
I understand that Carol Woods is hosting a forum for the Chapel Hill Candidates and School Board members earlier in the afternoon on that same day, but anyone (including candidates) who wants to attend both forums should have plenty of time to do so. The numerous forums, holidays, and meetings have made scheduling tough. I commend the candidates for braving the grueling schedule between now and November.
Thanks, Samantha. According
Thanks, Samantha. According to my information the Carol Woods Forum is the week after yours. Do I have it wrong?
