The Herald has a story today about Orange County forming a committee to educate the voters about the proposed County Commissioners districting plan. Orange County voters will get to vote on the matter this November. The plan would work like this:
THE PROPOSED PLAN
Orange County will be divided into two districts. The districts will roughly follow the school district lines.
District 1 will include Chapel Hill, Carrboro and some nearby suburban and rural buffer areas. District 1 will have 3 seats on the board. The voters of District 1 will choose their party nominees in May, but voters from both districts will choose the winners in November.
District 2 will be the whole rest of the county including Hillsborough, White Cross, Efland and points north. District 2 will have 2 seats on the board. As with District 1, the primaries will be open only to District 2 voters, but all voters will participate in the general election.
With each week the details of NC House Speaker Jim Black's political machine become more embarrassing to Democrats in particular and North Carolinians in general. Or at least it ought to be embarassing to Democrats. The latest revelations turn out to be sadly not-so-shocking:
Jim Black & Co. took control of the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2002 by bribing fellow house member Michael Decker with an offer of $50,000 and a job for Decker's son. Decker accepted the offer and took the $50,000 (primarily in donations to his campaign account). His son got the job at the legislature as well. In turn, Decker switched from Republican to Democrat and turned a 61-59 Republican majority into a 60-60 deadlock in the legislature. WCHL 1360 AM and WCOM 103.5 FM will both be covering the local elections today and tonight.
First, at 12:30 this afternoon, WCHL will have a midday update on how turnout looks and how the new voting technology is working. Through the afternoon WCHL will also be having further updates during breaks in their programming.
At 8 PM, WCOM will be covering the election with host Triangle Slim and special guest appearances from some local pundits (including some possibly familiar names from OP). Tune in to hear the early returns and analysis.
Then at 9 PM, WCHL will have its election night special coverage of both the Orange County races AND the Chatham County primaries.
Also note, News 14 Carolina on cable television will be having live coverage of 17 races from around central and eastern North Carolina and will be reporting on a total of 74 different races with an on-screen ticker and other updates. Their coverage will start at 7:30 PM and run until 10 or 11 PM.
It's time again for the biennial review of confusing judicial races in North Carolina.
Orange/Chatham Superior Court
Locally, we have the first ever competitive local Superior Court Judge race featuring the following candidates: Chuck Anderson, Allen Baddour, Carl Fox, Ken Oettinger, Michael Patrick, and Adam Stein.
This race is a tough decision in that we have six really strong and well-qualified candidates, all of them with strong Democratic party history and some of them with strong progressive political backgrounds. You get to vote for two candidates in the Superior Court race.
In light of recent events, please join us in sending the message that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our community.
