December 2015
The filing period begins today for the 2016 elections. The General Assembly recently moved the state's primary elections up to March 15—an early holiday gift for local politics geeks, perhaps an annoyance for others. So, what's on the line for Orange County in the March elections?
On March 15th, the following elections were held:
- Primary elections:
- NC Senate District 23
- NC House District 50
- NC House District 56
- Orange County Board of Commissioners
- General elections:
- Orange County Schools Board of Education
As the holiday season sets in, many of Orange County's public bodies are taking a break. This week, only the county commissioners are meeting. They'll be electing their chair and vice chair later today. All of the other boards are off this week.
Both of our school boards meet this week, as does the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners, which will swear in new board members on Monday evening.
The talking-at-elected-officials-at-podiums-at-7-p.m. model isn’t working for the great majority of residents in our community. This method excludes too many people, and it privileges those who can spend many hours participating in lengthy meetings.
