Carrboro High School
This spring I have been going to a lot of high school events. My son graduates from Carrboro High School and former students at Chapel Hill HS are graduating. Last weekend in Winson Salem the state Ultimate playoffs occurred. This is a sport which requires almost no equipment: a frisbee and a field. Teams are low key, they don't have practice everyday. Carolina Friends won first place. CHHS 2nd, Carrboro 3rd and ECHHS 4th in the state! I've been impressed by the high school plays and concerts this year. As funding for school declines students are concerned that their favorite courses will be cut. Historically our district has funded the cultural arts. I hope that even the "smaller" classes will be allowed to continue. Students at Carrboro were worried about losing some of the chorus classes. Today Carrboro had their senior assembly. Students put in an impressive number of volunteer hours, earned many scholarships and spoke up for diversity and social justice. We have a lot of talent in our schools.

The N&O just announced that NCDOT has agreed to build Carrboro's preferred design for Smith Level Rd, but is dropping their previous requirement that Carrboro must pick up the ongoing maintenance tab for the roadway if the town's preferred design is to be accepted.
The Arts Wing does not compete with teaching positions for funding. Construction projects are funded through construction bonds NOT the operating budget.
- Federal stimulus package provides $5.5 million in interest-free loans for qualified school construction.
The County Commission needs to vote to accept these funds, which would
According to the latest available figures from the CHCCS budget ...
If Carrboro High School was funded at the
same level PER STUDENT as the other two district high schools, Carrboro High would
receive $2 million more a year.
Carrboro High students are budgeted 52% less PER
STUDENT than the larger high schools.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools just released a statement saying that the School Board selected a new principal for Carrboro High list night. Parents at the brand new school have been feeling shafted as their students have less advanced courses available, and their last principal was let go rather swiftly and unceremoniously. I wonder if people will be more satisfied after this new principal gets settled in.
