Wake county just isn't crowded enough to support rail transit outside experts say

The panelists said Wake County was not likely to attract the federal funding it would need for a light rail line, and it doesn’t have a dense downtown employment center that would support rush-hour commuter trains.

“It’s a mass mode,” Polzin said. “And you need mass to make it work cost-effectively."

But Chapel Hill is going to bet $30 million (with Durham) that we could use for other transit on getting federal and state funding?  Now that's something worth ranting about!

Triangle Transit Fare Increase Proposal Public Workshop

Triangle Transit will be holding public workshops to provide information on proposed increases to regional bus fares and to get input from transit riders. Proposed fare changes are shown on this flyer.

Information for the meeting being held in Chapel Hill is included in this event. Dates and times for workshops being held in Durham County and Wake County can be found here.

Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit Project Public Meeting

The purpose of this meeting is to share with the public the 2012 scoping comments, how the Project staff addressed issues raised in the scoping comments, and the project alignments being evaluated in the Environmental Impact Statement phase.

Triangle Transit and the Project Team will be giving a presentation at 5:00 PM and another duplicate presentation at 6:00 PM. Doors will open at 4:30 PM.

A Community Conversation- Affordable Housing & Transit-Oriented Development

Triangle Transit and local governments have heard from residents and community groups that it is important to make sure that housing opportunities for residents at many different income levels exist in neighborhoods along the proposed Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit (DOLRT) corridor.

We have heard this concern and will be hosting a Community Conversation with local urban planning researchers and staff from the NC Justice Center about Transit-Oriented Development and Affordable Housing on Friday, March 15th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Durham City Hall Committee Room.

The event will include about 45-60 minutes of presentations of recent research on affordable housing and transit, followed by 90 minutes for community members to ask questions, make comments, and have a broad discussion on this topic.

City of Durham and Town of Chapel Hill staff will be available to contribute to discussions of specific issues in each community.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Primer on Transit Referendum and Associated Transit Plan

It turns out that many people are uninformed or misinformed about the specifics of the transit tax and the plan.  Foks don't even realize that there's a plan behind the tax referendum, and that a vote for the tax endorses it.    If the tax passes, the BoCC and TTA have the authority to levy the tax and proceed with the plan. .
Without debating the pros and cons of transit , I hope that readers take a few minutes to understand the plan. We sent the primer below to our mailing list. It includes links to the plan and the financial information.
