Racial & Economic Justice
The Women's Agenda Assembly is a forum for women's issues in our county. Our objective is to discuss four main issues: access to health care, civic participation and equality, economic self-sufficiency, and violence against women. Please register to hear about these issues and discuss them with your peers!
A statewide nonprofit, NC Women United, drafts a general women's agenda with detailed policy proposals for each installment of the forums, and coordinators and committee members plan assemblies at the local level. We recommend that you take a look at the Draft Agenda prior to the assembly.
We are still looking for volunteers for this event! We have the following needs:
- Facilitators: Guide discussion among groups of 10 (training provided!)
- Scribes: Record discussion from small groups.
- Registration: Help set up the event and check in participants.

Project Homeless Connect Orange County (PHC) is a one-day, one-stop center to link people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, homelessness with a broad range of services. Guests are offered assistance with housing, employment, health and dental care, foot care, mental health care, veterans’ benefits, social service benefits, legal services, and more. They also receive lunch and are offered haircuts, showers, and coats.

I know the purpose of this site is Orange County politics, but I want to know if others are bothered by the situation in Wake County schools. I went to the rally today and heard Rev. Barber and the other speakers make their case against the new direction of the Wake schools ("neighborhood schools" or resegregation depending on your point of view). It was a well organized and fairly well attended (~ 1000 people) event. We left before things got REALLY exciting and Rev. Barber and others were arrested at the Wake County school board meeting a few hours later, presumably for trespassing since they had been barred from attending.

Film highlights the stories of undocumented youth; Community discussion on immigration issues to follow
CHAPEL HILL - Every year, 65,000 undocumented students in the United States graduate from high school without legal status - without"papers." Many of these students know the U.S. as their home, yet without proof of residence cannot drive, work, or apply for state ID,and could be deported to a country they do not remember.
"Papers" is a feature-length documentary that tells the story of these undocumented youth, and the obstacles they face when they graduate from high school. The Adelante Education Coalition will host a free screening of "Papers". The evening will feature opening remarks and poetry readings from current and former Chapel Hill High School students. A community discussion on immigration led by Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate coordinator Graig Meyer will follow the film.

According to this morning's Herald-Sun, the Orange County "Board of Commissioners is one of the first government bodies in the nation to seek to define social justice and make it a backdrop for its decisions." In working to seek social justice, Orange County shall perform government duties including policy-making and budgeting with the express objectives of:
1. Striving for the elimination of oppression and inequity by creating an environment of equal opportunity in which no groups are targeted for harassment, exclusion, intimidation or violence.
