Target of FBI Raids, Jess Sundin, Will Speak in Chapel Hill on Nov. 30
Event is part of a national week of actions in solidarity with those being targeted by the FBI
Please join us Tuesday Nov. 30 from 7:00pm - 8:30pm, at the Chapel Hill Public Library (100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill NC). Minneapolis antiwar activist Jess Sundin, one of the people targeted by the Sept 24 FBI raids, will be speaking in Chapel Hill about the raids and the growing movement to defend those being attacked by the FBI.
On September 24, the FBI raided the homes of 14 well-known anti-war and human rights activists in Chicago and Minneapolis. They also raided the office of the Minnesota Anti-War Committee. That same day, two activists in Durham, NC were visited by the FBI. According to the FBI, the goal of the raids was to investigate alleged “material support for terrorism". These activists have done nothing wrong, yet face secretive Grand Jury trials, jail time and fines. Their freedom is at stake, along with everyone's freedom to speak our minds and to organize against war and occupation.
Come learn about the past and current history of FBI attacks on social movements in the US, and to understand your rights and what you can do to stand in solidarity with those being targeted! The event is FREE. Donations will be collected for the Minneapolis and Chicago's activists' legal defense fund.

When I first learned about the proposed framework for downtown, I was amazed to see such big, new ideas being proposed by the consultant hired by the Town of Chapel Hill and the Downtown Partnership. This proposal presents an opportunity for Chapel Hill to do something visionary and to once again have a thriving urban center that is the envy of other communities. But.
The only way that this Big Idea will evolve into a Good Idea is if Chapel Hill can make this vision our own. Not only that, but I also think this plan might have trouble being approved in Chapel Hill without generating significant community investment in its approach. Or, as I said in June:
The primary election will be on May 4, 2010, and it's time to do the
work that will make a difference this year! We need significant voter
registration to KEEP NC BLUE in 2010!
On Saturday, March 20th, the Orange County Democratic Party (OCDP) is
hosting a voter registration drive in partnership with our friends at
Organizing for America. The OCDP will be at the Carrboro Century Center
from 12:30 - 5:00pm. We have two 90 minute shifts (1pm and 3pm) - we
hope you'll sign up to work one or both of them!
Show up at the Carrboro Century Center a few minute before your shift
begins. If you are not trained in voter registration, we'll take a few
minutes to do that. It's EASY and FUN! Then we'll send you out to hit
the pavement at local hot spots to find those folks who need to
register or update their registration. When you're finished, you'll
bring the completed registration forms back to the Century Center.
We hope to see you there!

The Democratic Party has proven to be a failure and has demonstrated time after time that it will support the agenda of corporations and the wealthy elites over the general citizenry. Due to onerous ballot access laws and the overwhelming majority of the media that are owned by the same wealthy powers who buy our politicians, third party efforts have not gotten much traction onthe heavily-sloped playing field.
I believe that a first step toward authentic democracy is to liberate citizens from party affiliation. Then, with a sufficient number of citizens who are not affiliated with either party, we can take the next step toward organizing a party that would truly represent ordinary citizens. Think of it as a weaning process.
How about a goal of making Orange County the first county in the United States to have a majority of independent or unaffiliated voters? It would not affect anyone's ability to vote in primaries - just choose which party when you vote. There would be no sacrifice of voting power, but it would send a message that we are not being adequately represented by the out-of-touch Democratic and Republican parties.
