This area has been known for decades for its thriving creative music scene. Many people travel from around the region – and sometimes around the world – to attend shows at the Cat's Cradle and other venues in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Less famous, but also doing us proud, are visual artists, dancers, actors, and filmmakers around the Triangle. In fact, Chapel Hill was home to the first Flicker festival, which now takes place in ten cities around the world!
Note: I posted this blog entry on my personal website on Sunday, January 4th, 2015, but opted to share it here as well at the invitation of OP editors. While I'm eager to learn what others think about the proposed Arts and Innovation Center and the numerous, interesting issues related to the proposal at hand, I'm not contributing this piece to start or stoke a debate between me and OP readers and contributors. I'm just throwing it out there as a thought piece. My mind might change. So might the proposal. Who knows? (It's Carrboro!) Looking forward to reading other people's comments and ideas, and to hearing from residents, business owners, in-town workers and others at the public hearing or beforehand. The BOA already is getting really thoughtful comments by email as a result of the broadly-distributed notice of public hearing. Hope you'll consider weighing in as well.
Our theme this year is "Weaving Communities: histories, homes, lives." We'll be featuring oral history performances on Northside and Rogers Rd history, presenting community honors for all this year's successes, and providing a preview of our new history exhibit. And of course, we will be enjoying kids' games and festivities, music, dancing, and of course, delicious food (support from Mama Dips, Vimala's, Bread and Butter, Open Eye, and our grillmaster Calvin).
Come celebrate the end of the school year, the coming of spring, and the community we are ALL a part of Saturday, May 3rd!
Whether you can come for the entire event or just 20 minutes. come join us. This is an incredible gathering of folks from all corners of Chapel Hill/Carrboro, from the university, and beyond. We have so much to be thankful for, and so much to celebrate.

Late this afternoon, via social media linked to a News and Observer
article, came the gut punch news that beloved local restaurant Panzanella is closing.
On a personal level, this is just very, very sad. Since my wife and I got
married over a decade ago, we have celebrated all sorts of major life
events, and perhaps most of them– graduations, birthdays, wedding
anniversaries, rare visits from cherished friends, you name it – at
Panzanella. With such good food, valuable relationships with local
farmers, brewers, and other food producers, not to mention what has
always been consistently a warm and friendly staff– this is a big
surprise that nobody saw coming.
The "Carrboro Anarchist Bookfair" is... in Chapel Hill! OK.

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen and EmPOWERment, Inc present a roast and toast of Mayor Mark Chilton.
We will be celebrating Mark's 20 years of fantastic service to our communities. We acknowledge Mark as a "Jack of All Trades" and his love for family, politics & justice, community advocacy, and real estate.
We gather to honor his accomplishments, as this year marks the end of his fourth term as Mayor of Carrboro, serving since 2005. He was elected to the Chapel Hill Town Council in 1991 as the youngest ever elected official in North Carolina at the age of 21. In 2000, he became the Executive Director of the young and growing non-profit, EmPOWERment, Inc. He served in this position for two years, and continues to work with the organization as Director of Special Programs.
EmPOWERment, Inc is honored that Mark has chosen them as recipients of the proceeds from this event to benefit their mission and service. EmPOWERment has been serving communities throughout Orange and Chatham Counties since 1996, and works to empower people and communities to control their own destinies through affordable housing, education, advocacy, community organizing, and grassroots economic development.
Please join us on October 29 to celebrate Mark with a fun and entertaining roast complete with dinner, drinks, and plenty of laughter. We are looking forward to seeing you there! If you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation of your choosing. We appreciate you and your support!
