Is there a fine line between engagable government and too sassy?

Hat tip to our friend Lee Storrow for noticing this blog post on "16 Sassy Tweets From The Nation's 16th Largest School District" about Wake County Schools' Twitter feed.

What to name Elementary #11?

Back in March, members of the OCTS-Lincoln-Northside alumni group spoke at a CHCCS School Board meeting asking that we name the new elementary school, located between McMasters and Caldwell, "Northside Elementary" to continue the proud tradition of education that has occurred on that site.

In our board meeting tonight,  there was a suggestion from a board member that we go ahead and act quickly on this, while we have plenty of things like Common Core and redistricting to worry about and we're down a staff member for community relations who would normally drive this process, and make the easy decision to name Elementary #11 as Northside Elementary.

OP has been a great source for name ideas before.  How does this community feel about resurrecting the Northside name for this elementary school?

Brad Miller bows out of run for the 4th

Just received this email:

James,

Because your support has been so important to me, I wanted you to hear from me that I will not seek another term in Congress.

Serving in Congress has been a remarkable opportunity. Thank you.

I knew Republicans in the legislature would dismantle the district that I have represented for the last decade, and they did. The thirteenth district was split six ways. I also knew that they would create one packed Democratic district in the Triangle, so that all the surrounding districts would be Republican, and they did. I knew that both David Price and I would both reside in that district, and we do. And I knew that the district would include the neighborhoods that we have each looked to for our support, and it does.

Lee Scholars Charter School Moves Forward

I have "School Board 101" tomorrow and Friday, so if I were smart, I'd probably wait to write this after being trained in how to avoid saying something stupid.  But that's never quite been my style, so here goes.  As always, note that I speak here for myself only, not the CHCCS board in this.

BoCC meeting Oct 4th - landfill decision?

I'm at the Orange County Board of County Commissioners meeting tonight to hear the latest on the landfill and Rogers Road mitigation.  I'm spending a night outside the school district and talking about issues that won't help me get elected, so it must be important.  The attachment (link below) has a county manager proposal that closes the landfill in 2013, and also addresses some of the mitigation items requested by the community.  Looking forward to BoCC reaction -- are we going to finally do something for this community or push it further along the road?
