Hillsborough Rail Station Plans

Last year, the Rail Station Task Force recommended the Collins Parcel in Hillsborough as the best place for a future Amtrak and commuter station for Orange County, which is one of only two counties along the North Carolina Railroad corridor statewide without passenger service today (Davidson County is the other). Conceptual plans for the station and transit-oriented development on the site were presented to a packed audience on March 31, 2010 at the Orange County Library.

NCDOT Yields to Carrboro on Smith Level Rd

The N&O just announced that NCDOT has agreed to build Carrboro's preferred design for Smith Level Rd, but is dropping their previous requirement that Carrboro must pick up the ongoing maintenance tab for the roadway if the town's preferred design is to be accepted.

Rigorous debate at NAACP candidate forum

Last night, the Chapel Hill/Carrboro chapter of the NAACP held a candidate’s forum for the County Commissioner at-large and County Sheriff’s race.

The candidates present were: Clarence Birkhead, Lindy Pendergrass, Joal Hall Broun, Barry Jacobs and Joe Phelps. Alice Gordon also stopped by, even though she is uncontested in her County Commissioner race in District 1.

There was actually a lot of ground covered at the forum. Among the topics discussed was the 287g Program, overcrowding in county jails, funding for the Chapel Hill library and Google Fiber Optics.

Most notable was William Thorp, the NAACP chapter chair, giving an impassioned plea to the commissioner-hopefuls to fix the situation in Rogers Road. The plea came in the wake of a new report that found 9 out of 11 wells in the region were contaminated and a quarter of the septic tanks in the area were in disrepair.

Mark and Mark make the pitch to Google

It has come to my attention that not all of you have seen the video that the Mayors of Chapel Hill and Carrboro made to convince Google to bring their fiber optic network to southern Orange County. It's really super cheesy, but a nice effort was made. I kind of think it would have been more engaging if the mayors weren't so scripted (not like either of them needs help gabbing) and if it showed some of the parts of the community that would benefit from high-speed Internet.

Here's the video...

Great News!

Just wanted to comment on what great news this is. Kudos to the Carrboro board for holding out for the right result! How strange that it should be so difficult and controversial to add bike lanes and a place for people to walk without adding new lanes for automobiles. (Note: This substitutes for the attempted post under "Will Chapel Hill / Carrboro ever be bike-friendly?")

Jump in at OrangePolitics, the water's fine!

I just sent the following message to all the candidates for which I have e-mail addresses. This is becoming my annual tradition of inviting candidates to come and play with us here on OP. I'm posting it here in the interest of yet more transparency.

Live Blogging the Downtown Public Forum

The Town of Chapel Hill and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership are planning the process for the future of downtown Chapel Hill. The Downtown Public Forum is Thursday, April 8, at 8:30 a.m. and again at 4:30 p.m. The event will be held in the second floor Great Room at the Top of the Hill Restaurant. If you can't make either forum please open OP on your browser and tune into my coverage of the event. I will be in attendance at the morning forum.

Candidate's Website Review

I will be posting a review of the candidate's websites for County Commissioner soon. It is interesting to look at the different campaign websites and see who is internet savy and who is just outdated. After County Commissioner, County School Board and Sheriff candidates will follow. Have you looked at the websites and seen any you specifically like or dislike? Let me know!

Candidates Website Reviews

I will be posting a review of the candidate's websites for County Commissioner. It is interesting to look at the different campaign websites and see who is internet savy and who is just outdated. A similar project to when Ruby looked at the candidate's different yard signs. After County Commissioner, County School Board and Sheriff candidates will follow. Have you looked at the websites and seen any you specifically like or dislike? Let me know!

Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness

A question has been raised about the Orange County Partnership to End Homeless. The Partnership completed its plan in 2007 and has 5 goals:

     Reduce Chronic Homelessness

     Increase Employment

     Prevent Homelessness

     Increase Access to Services

Increase Public Participation in Ending Homelessness

The 2009 Annual Report will be released in May and will highlight the progress made towards  those goals. This annual report can be found on the Partnership's website. Any member of our executive team would be happy to answer further questions about the partnership and its work.

County Commissioner Website Reviews

These are my reviews of all of the websites of the candidates running for County Commissioner! I will be looking at web sites in other races in the coming weeks. Let me know what you think!

PTA and League of Women Voters OC Commissioner Live-Blog

Yup, I will be live-blogging yet another OC Commish forum for you guys! The forum is Wednesday April 14 in the Chapel Hill Council Chambers.

My coverage will be right here starting at 7pm. If you don't particularly want to go to the forum OR read my live-blog (where I periodically diverge on rants about people asking me to type softer)--the forum will also be televised live on the government access, Time Warner channel 18.

Scheduled to attend so far are: Joal Hall Broun, Alice Gordon, Barry Jacobs, Earl McKee, Joe Phelps and Renee Price.

2010 WCHL Community Forum: You're Invited to Submit Questions

A great community tradition returns on Thursday, April 22:  The 1360 WCHL Community Forum.

This year, we are inviting members of the community to send in suggested questions which may be used during the sessions. If you’d like to submit a question for consideration, please e-mail it to:  2010Forum@1360wchl.com

We’d love to hear from you!

Also this year, we are returning to our roots and presenting ten topics in ten hours.  Below are this year’s topics and panelists who are scheduled to appear (a few others are still awaiting confirmation).

For those not familiar with the "WCHL Community Forum", it iso ur most anticipated single day of broadcasting of the year.  The tradition of delving into and focusing on issues facing our community started many years ago… and brings together points of view of government officials, community leaders and citizens.

I hope you will be a part of the day by by sending in your questions.

Improper Record Keeping at Hillsborough Police Department?

I just received the following press release from the town of Hillsborough.  I wonder what impact this will have on the sheriff's race, where (recently) former Hillsborough Police Chief Clarence Birkhead is challenging incumbent Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass, with early voting starting today.  Because this is the first I have heard of this issue, I have no idea if it's significant that the town chose to put out a press release today, as opposed to waiting until the investigation was completed.  The timing seems odd to me, and from the press release it's unclear that the police department (or its leadership) did anything wrong if indeed their accrediting agency instructed them to backdate reports.  Is there anyone more familiar with this issue who can comment?

Hillsborough Town Manager Eric Peterson is nearing the end of an investigation regarding improper recordkeeping in the Police Department’s CALEA accreditation process.

Indy endorsements 2010

As usual, there's some good in the Independent Weekly's endorsements, and some bad, and... oh hey, there's a judicial race this year?  Wow, thanks for the heads up, Indy.

They recommend Renee Price for Commissioner District 2, and Barry Jacobs for the At-large district. I'm sure some of you readers will respectfully disagree and prefer Joal Broun, but I think she's fine where she is and I'd would rather see Barry continue his good work on the Board of County Commissioners.

The surprise for me was that they chose to endorse 28-year incumbent Lindy Pendergrass for Sheriff rather than former Hillsborough Police Chief Clarence Birkhead. There is no doubt that Pendergrass has served us well (for longer than some voters have been alive), but Birkhead seems more in line with Orange County values today.

For Orange County School Board, they picked Debbie Piscitelli, Anne Medenblik, Donna Dean Coffey, Laura Nicholson. But they didn't offer much explanation for not endorsing Brenda Stephens, I thought.

Here's the Indy's entire slate:

Voting site addresses and times for early voting here:  http://www.co.orange.nc.us/elect/onestop.asp

Have you voted yet?  And who are you supporting (if you feel inclined to share)?

Mark Peters has his eye on you

Hey Mark, what's all this business about you making UNC's Director of Local Relations hand over her contact list? All you're going to find out is who wants to know what UNC is doing, in other words: everyone.

I understand you've also asked the Town of Chapel Hill to share all official e-mail regarding relocating the homeless shelter. I can kind of imagine what you're trying to get at there, but I doubt you'll find anything useful.  So maybe Mayor Foy and the Chancellor Moeser made some kind of arrangement to transfer this land, that's already publicly apparent. What does that prove?  How will that help your neighbors' cause to keep the Interfaith Council's Community House out of the neighborhood?  It almost seems like you want to intimidate public officials, Mark. I'm not sure why.

Website Reviews for Candidates running for Sheriff

And now it is time to review the web sites for the candidates running for Sheriff in Orange County. (See the first in this series of web site reviews here.)  Since there are only three candidates I was able to look at these sites at the same time and do more of a comparison between the three.

Any Chance of a Reasoned, Civil Dialogue?

I'm a big supporter of the IFC and its mission.  And I support its desire to create a new type of facility, a transitional facility for homeless men and the need to relocate somewhere.  And I'm disappointed that there is opposition to the proposed site for that new facility.  But I also think that the dialogue has gone beyond civility and that the neighborhoods adjoining the proposed site are being unfairly demonized.  In the 12 years I have served on Town advisory boards I have seen many neighborhoods oppose many projects for many different reasons - some good, some bad, some rational, some irrational.

The Children’s University closes after money troubles, state investigations

Just a heads up on some shenanigans at a Chapel Hill preschool over near Ephesus Church Road. We just posted the story on the Indy's Triangulator blog.

Help The Daily Tar Heel connect with the community

Last year, when I took a job as city editor of The Daily Tar Heel, it was clear to me that our role in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Orange County was growing. We needed to be proactive with our coverage to fill a gap left as other local news organizations scaled back.

As I prepare to be the DTH  editor-in-chief in the fall, I know filling that gap means more than just providing the news -- it means letting people in the community know they can count on us to do so.

Because we're a student-run newspaper catered primarily to a University audience, we need to work harder to let you know you can trust our coverage of local issues, from elections to business to the waste transfer station debate.

Regional Transit To Carrboro, Please!

Triangle Transit is proposing service changes for the 15-501 corridor between Chapel Hill and Durham. I (and others in the region) believe that these service changes should include regional transit service through downtown Carrboro so that residents can take a direct bus to Durham.

Carrboro has the highest transit ridership per capita in North Carolina (9%) without even having a direct bus service out to places where many residents work and hang out (namely downtown Durham, RTP, etc.).  At the same time, Carrboro is building up and not out, which means that our land use supports increased transit services.  We have the highest density of all large towns and cities in NC with high transit ridership.  Finally, I think that economically, increased transit service to Carrboro would very much benefit both downtown Carrboro and West Franklin Street in Chapel Hill by allowing riders from Durham a much faster way to get to our stores and food offerings.

Stand Against Racism is a movement initiated by the YWCA in 2008 in order to raise awareness that racism still exists in our communities and that it cannot be ignored or tolerated. Our objective is to bring organizations together, who believe like we do, that united we can eliminate racism.

Together with 65 YWCA Associations throughout the USA, we invite your organization to participate in our 3rd annual Stand Against Racism which will take place on Friday, April 30, 2010. Churches, temples, synagogues and other houses of worship are welcome to join us on May 1st and 2nd, 2010.

In 2009, the Stand Against Racism reached over 320 organizations which became Participating Sites of the Stand and collectively attracted over 30,000 people. In 2010, we are expecting the participation of approximately 1,500 organizations and over 200,000 individuals who will be taking a Stand Against Racism on April 30.

Campaign donations 2010

For a few weeks now, I have been compiling as much campaign finance information as was available to me.

Well, I finally finished. I have separated the information into three spreadsheets that I am sharing with the public: one containing candidate information, the other containing donor information, and the last containing itemized transactions from the donors to the candidates.

As I wrote before, it's difficult to find information on local elections. There is simply not a lot of money in play and the data is hard to get your hands on.

Is Donna Coffey an Orange County School Board progressive candidate?

I know there has not been a lot of talk about the Orange County School Board Race but....

Does anyone know what is going on with Donna Coffey?  I see that she got the endorsement by the INDY, but she is also getting the endorsement from the Orange County Republican Party as “the conservative candidate”, in fact they had a meeting 2 Saturday’s ago (17th) at the Cedar Grove Ruritan Club to Introduce her….

You can't be a Progressive Candidate if you’re endorsed by the Orange County GOP as “The Conservative Candidate”!

The final countdown

The Primary Election is in one week! (What a great time for a statewide news network to stop reporting and start begging, eh?)  Early voting is still on until Saturday at 1pm at the Board of Elections office in Hillsborough and at the Planetarium on UNC's campus. Remember: you can REGISTER and VOTE in one swell foop only if you vote early, and you can do it in either location. If you vote on Election Day (Tuesday, May 4) you have to do it at the site for the precinct where you are registered. (Check out a sample ballot.)

In Orange County, we'll be selecting members of the County School Board (not city schools, only county) and making partisan nominations for County Commissioner, County Sheriff, State Legislative seats. We'll also be joining the rest of state state in nominating candidates for U.S. Senate and Court of Appeals Judges, but the difference is that the winners of the Democratic Party primary in Orange County will be over the hump, whereas the battle for the Senate will be just beginning.

Here are some of the resources we've put together on OrangePolitics this year to share information about the candidates...

The most important endorsement...

...YOURS! You regulars know the drill: this is a special rules thread. Only write about who you are voting for (or would be if you lived in their district) and why you support them.

Other topics and criticism of candidates is welcome on other posts, see http://www.orangepolitics.org/issue/elections/2010.

Joe Phelps and the Realtors

Last week the upstanding Greater Chapel Hill Association of Realtors* announced they were endorsing realtor Joe Phelps for at-large County Commissioner (as well as farmer Earl McKee in district 2). How in-depth was the research behind this endorsement? They didn't even look at the other candidates.

The association said neither Jacobs nor Broun approached them about an endorsement.

“If we had been, we would have met with them and listened to their views,” Zimmerman said.
