Since Orange County passed our transit plan in 2013, Chapel Hill Transit has been able to add more service and significantly address the need to replace existing buses. GoTriangle and Orange Public Transportation have also been able to add service and vehicles, but we are focusing on CHT here.
To highlight the new service we just got this past August 2018:
- CW Route extension of it's peak evening service
- D Route extension of it's peak evening service
- All routes with existing Saturday service had that service extended from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm

Vehicles
Chapel Hill Transit has been able to purchase eight (8) new fixed route buses with our transit tax funds. In addition to these funds, these dollars are also funding the current work on the North South BRT project and bus stop upgrades (shelters, lighting etc…).
Overall, Chapel Hill Transit has been able to acquire 36 new buses, 7 new demand response vehicles and been awarded funds for the purchase of 2 electric buses. Here's the breakdown of these vehicles:
- Replacement of 36 fixed route buses by FY19 (delivered/ordered)
- 16 Fixed Route buses replaced through FY17
- 6 Fixed Route buses delivered in May (5 w/ OC Transit Plan $)
- 6 Fixed Route buses ordered in FY18 (March 2019 delivery)
- 5 Fixed Route buses pending order with grant funds
- 3 Fixed Route buses pending order w/ OC Transit Plan $
- Replacement of 15 Demand Response vehicles
- 7 Demand Response vehicles delivered in FY18
- ~8 Demand Response vehicles pending order with grant funds
