Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board Receives Racial Equity Recommendations

Last October, the Campaign for Racial Equity in Our Schools—a coalition of students, parents, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools staff, and concerned community advocates—released a report detailing the racial inequities that plague the Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools and making recommendations for beginning to resolve those inequities.

Last week, the group presented its findings to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education and issued a simple challenge: Can the board, with the Campaign and other stakeholders, develop an equity plan by May 2016 and then have monthly checkups on progress toward implementing that plan?

The board seemed receptive to the group's requests, but in line with its process for decision making, it referred the issue to staff and added an equity item to the agenda for the board's retreat in early February.
