Indy endorsements are out!

And I can't say I disagree with them much. (But I do have some quibbles. More about that when we post our annual Endorsements Thread soon.) Here's an overview of their picks (which you already know if you follow us on Twitter):

  • Chapel Hill Town Council: Sally Greene, Ed Harrison, Maria Palmer, George Cianciolo
  • CHCCS School Board: James Barett, Michelle Brownstein, Andrew Davidson
  • Carrboro Board of Alderpeople: Randee Haven-O'Donnell, Jacquie Gist, Sammy Slade
  • Hillsborough Town Board: Kathleen Ferguson, Jennifer Weaver

To learn more about all these folks see our spreadsheet of candidates at orangepolitics.org/elections-2013/candidates

I love that the Indy now posts the full text of the candidate questionnares. Those things take a LOT of work to complete.

Read the article and let us know what you think of the Indy's analysis.

First of all, I want to congratulate the incumbents on their endorsements. All three have impressive records on the Board and are well known in the community. As a challenger, I expect to be at a disadvantage. It is true that I have not had the opportunity to participate in various task forces and committees and enact policies that come as a result of being an elected official. While I appreciate INDY Weeks acknowledgment of my “charms”, I do in fact stand for substantial issues facing our town that the incumbents have not addressed during their past terms in office. There is a serious employment and housing inequality crisis in Carrboro that has progressively worsened to the point where there are few permanent residents between the ages of 22 and 30. We cannot offer them any employment opportunities or affordable housing, and as a recent graduate/stay-at-home father in a one-income family, I understand this struggle. Despite being hailed as a walkable and bikable town, the majority of our children still arrive to school by car or bus when it would be more convenient, and encourage active lifestyles, to walk or bike. I would like to encourage citizens to visit my website, www.kurtstolka.com and learn more about my views, see my responses during live forums and to various questionnaires, and learn more about me as a serious and dedicated candidate for Carrboro Board of Alderman.

Kurt - just went to your web site, but none of the navigation is working.  This is with Safari on a Mac.

Kurt, your policies seem pretty much in line with the direction the Board of Aldermen is already going in. What sets you apart from the incumbents other than the fact than it's easier to complain than to make policies? (I should know!) I don't feel like you've made the case for people to not vote for one of those three very successful and effective alderpeople.

So is Al Vickers just not interested in being elected?  Seems like it'd be a good idea to at least show up.
