Is it the New Year's Eve romance yeilding September babies? In addition to OP's first birthday, this weekend also brings the 34th birthday of two close friends of mine (both of whom will be at the OP party), and the Flicker Festival's Tenth Birthday!
I have been a loyal Flicker-watcher since it's early days at Local 506, so while this anniversary makes me happy, it also makes me feel really old. ;-} Flicker will be observing it's tenth year with a variety of activities:
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
The three day event will begin Thursday at the original Flicker venue, Local 506, when all past and current Flicker directors will screen films. Norwood Cheek's "Young Rock" will wrap up the evening and features 17 music videos from bands such as Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, and Polvo. The film provides a veritable slice of the Chapel Hill music scene back from 1994.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
On Friday at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro there will be a screening and discussion led by New York film director, Phil Morrison, who recently finished shooting a feature entitled "Junebug" in his hometown of Winston-Salem. The film is based on a play by Angus MacLachlan, who collaborated with Morrison on their first film, "Tater Tomater", which screened at one of the first Flickers in 1994 and has since become a cult favorite. Along with showing "Tater Tomater", Morrison will also introduce Hollywood director Peyton Reed's "Almost Beat" which screened at the very first Flicker. The discussion will be followed by a block of Flicker favorites from the last 10 years.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
On Saturday, September 25th, filmmaking workshops at the ArtsCenter will further Flicker's mission to put filmmaking in the hands of more people.
BEST OF FLICKER SCREENING: Saturday, September 25th
The weekend will conclude with a screening at the Cat's Cradle. The program is a compilation of some of the most memorable films that Flicker has screened in its ten years. It will include shorts from Brett Ingram, Joyce Ventimiglia, Chris Jolly, Jason Middleton, and many more. Come out to see animations, documentaries, narratives and experimental pieces all shot on film, all shown at Flicker from 1994-2004. You will be able to see the history of your local film festival as it has always been seen, projected onto a screen in a small, dark rock club.

Tonight's showing of Norwood
Tonight's showing of Norwood Cheek's "Young Rock" compilation of rock videos with bits of local stuff in between was amazing! When I saw those videos 10 years ago, I thought the whole thing was a little trite, but now it has become a powerful document of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, as well as the 'indie rock' scene of the era.
Images of the old Cat's Cradle (and many people's uncertainty over whether it would survive that homeless era)... Mama Dip at her old location... the basement of the party house on Pritchard Avenue (still having parties)... Al (still at Al's Garage)... Merge Records (now gone to Durham)...Bill Smith (still the chef at Crook's Corner)... Frank Heath remembering the old old old Cat's Cradle at Rythm Alley... and a lot of my friends with less gray hair and more energy than they have now!
I came away from it certain that we are not making enough music videos these days! We need to get to work. I guess the Flicker workshops at the ArtsCenter on Saturday are a good start.
